ALEJE condemns the Killing of Ethiopian Muslims

On Friday, July 13, 2012, Meles Zenawis’s dictatorial regime ordered the federal police and its ready to kill Special Forces to enter Addis Ababa’s Awolia Mosque and kill innocent Muslim worshipers who peacefully gathered and requested freedom of worship. Meles Zenawi’s ethnic dictatorial regime has a long history of abusing, torturing and killing its own citizens. It has pitilessly killed over 200 peaceful demonstrators on the streets of Addis Ababa. But, what the regime did this past Friday was, once again, inhumane. In the Ethiopian culture, worship places are sanctuaries where mercy seekers seek refuge; but the callous regime in Addis Ababa disregarded this time honored value of the nation and turned the Holy place of the Muslim faith, the Mosques, into a war zone.

Alliance for Liberty, Equality, and Justice in Ethiopia (ALEJE) strongly condemns this barbaric act in its entirety and wants to remind the regime in Ethiopia that such atrocities are typical examples of state sponsored terrorism on the people of worship. ALEJE holds Meles Zenawi’s regime accountable for all national and regional consequences that may arise as a result of this heinous crime against humanity.

In the last six months, provoked and instigated by the regime’s misguided attempt to control the day to day affairs of faith based institutions,  the Muslim community in Ethiopia has been peacefully demonstrating and requesting the regime to take its hands off the Muslim faith in Ethiopia. However, instead of addressing the legitimate demand of the people, the regime has chosen to use deadly force inside a Mosque.

ALEJE strongly believes that engaging the Ethiopian Muslim Community in the most civil manner and addressing their legitimate request is the only way to end the current civil unrest in the country.  ALEJE also requests the Ethiopian regime to redeploy its forces from all places of worship, to immediately release the hundreds of Muslim worshipers detained last Friday and to bring to justice those who are responsible for this despicable crime.

ALEJE calls on the international donor community to condemn this barbaric act against the Ethiopian Muslims and hold Zenawi’s regime accountable for it past and present crimes against humanity. ALEJE also extends its call to the Ethiopian people inside and outside Ethiopia to stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters.  Muslims, Christians and people of all other faiths should come together and fight the dictatorial regime of Meles Zenawi for this is the only means that guarantees freedom, justice and democracy for all in Ethiopia.

Victory for the struggling people of Ethiopia!

Down with Meles Zenawi’s minority dictatorship!
